Chemical Peels for Sun-Damaged Skin

When you think of adjectives that you would like other people to use to describe your skin, it is likely that you think of words like soft, smooth, healthy and attractive. But what if your skin is anything but that? What if the best adjectives to describe your skin are dry, uneven and sun-damaged? Are there any treatment options for these conditions? Yes! One of the best options for dealing with dry, sun-damaged skin is a chemical peel.

There are a lot of misconceptions about chemical peels. However, they are a great tool that can be used to combat sun-damaged skin. They are performed as an outpatient procedure in the comfort of our office.

Chemical peels come in different strengths. During the procedure, the practitioner will apply the solution to your face. In light peels, it is usually some type of glycolic acid. Depending on the depth of the peel, you may feel a mild stinging sensation on your skin. Once the chemical peel has been allowed to sit for a while, the practitioner will usually apply something to neutralize the solution.

Once the procedure is done, you will be given very specific instructions about how to clean, protect and moisturize your skin. You need to follow these instructions to the letter as they are key to you being able to heal properly. After a mild chemical peel, you should expect your skin to be a little red and irritated. However, this is normal and temporary.

If you have a deep chemical peel, you will have some downtime. However, the wait is well worth it because these types of peels produce the most dramatic results. They can be used to treat deep facial wrinkles, pre-cancerous growths and severely sun-damaged skin.

Once you have fully healed after your peel, you’re going to find that your skin is a lot healthier. It is going to be a lot smoother. You can repeat a light or medium chemical peel multiple times to improve the appearance of your sun-damaged skin. A deeper chemical peel can usually only be performed one time. However, the thing with deeper chemical peels is that they provide long-term results.
