Common Reasons to Consider Breast Implant Removal

At eSSe Plastic Surgery, we know what a major decision it is to opt for breast implant removal.  Most women do not get breast augmentation intending to have the implants removed.  However, it is possible to have situations where you choose or need to remove your implants.  If you are considering breast implant removal surgery, you are not alone; it is estimated 40,000 women per year make the same choice.

Why Women Choose Breast Implant Removal

The reasons women have their breast implants removed vary.  Sometimes it is as simple as being dissatisfied with the aesthetics of the implants, coupled with a desire for revision breast augmentation to make the breasts larger or smaller.  Another common reason is issues surrounding capsular contracture.  Women diagnosed with cancer of the breast or in whom it is found that calcium deposits are present will need their implants removed out of medical necessity.

Sometimes implants can shift or wrinkle, diminishing the cosmetic benefit they have. Rupturing and/or implant deflation can lead to asymmetry of the breasts and prompt a desire for removal. It is also possible for a woman’s body to reject the implants or adversely react to them, leading to complications.

What to Expect

When your implants are removed, you may or may not opt to have them replaced. In situations where the implant isn’t replaced, we may recommend a breast lift to ensure your breasts will look their best following surgery.  During your consultation, you can speak with one of our surgeons about the best option for you.

The procedure is performed in the comfort of our surgical suite. Following any scar tissue removal, the implant can be extracted.  Saline implants have the ability to be deflated before they are removed. In most cases, the implants are removed using the same opening that they were installed through.

Recovery time after the procedure varies depending on whether you opted to have new implants placed and the reason for your implant removal. You will be provided with post-care instructions that you must follow to the letter, including a schedule for follow-up visits.
