Reverse the Signs of Aging with a Chemical Peel

The most obvious signs of aging occur on the facial skin. Injury scars, discolorations caused by acne, brittle skin that wrinkles and other damage caused by environmental factors can make you look much older than you really are.

Rejuvenating the skin can be accomplished in several different ways, but a chemical peel is recommended for those who are concerned about poor skin tone and age-related pigment changes. This is a rather simple treatment that involves soaking the skin in an acid solution. The solution affects the upper epidermis and allows healthier skin to grow in its place.

We recommend that clients ask us for more information before choosing this treatment. There are several different kinds of chemical peels, and one of which is likely the best option depending on the amount of skin damage you have.

How a Chemical Peel Encourages Healthy Skin Growth

There are three kinds of chemical peels; they are superficial, medium-depth and deep peels. The first kind is the preferred skin rejuvenation treatment for those who have mild discolorations not caused by deep wounds or scars. A medium-depth peel is recommended for those who are concerned about moderate wrinkling and lesions caused by overexposure to the sun. A deep peel is the best treatment for severe scarring.

Usually, glycolic or trichloroacetic acid is used to perform a chemical peel. The acid used and the amount of time for the peel effect to occur depends on the type of condition being treated.

What Patients Should Know

Before a chemical peel is performed, we schedule an appointment with the client and go over the entire treatment procedure. We will likely recommend a facial cleaning for at least a week prior to the peel session.

The treatment itself starts with a thorough cleaning of the face. The peel solution is smoothed over the treatable area. After a short time, the solution is removed and the face cleansed once more.

Over the next 10 days or so, the old skin layer will peel off, much like it does after getting a mild sunburn. However, unlike a sunburn, the lower dermal layers are not damaged in any way. If a superficial peel is chosen, the old skin will come off much more rapidly than when a deeper peel is performed.

Is This the Right Treatment for You?

One of the advantages of a chemical peel over other skin rejuvenation procedures is that it actually stimulates new skin growth. What’s more, it also acts as a kick-start for increased collagen production. This is a benefit not seen when a filler injection or BOTOX® is performed.
