What Areas Does Xeomin Treat?

When we talk about an anti-aging treatment, most of us have one specific problem in mind – wrinkles. Wrinkles are as inevitable as the seasons changing, and just like the seasons, there’s no true way to stop wrinkles from forming. There is, however, a way to temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles and actively prevent wrinkles from becoming worse over time. At eSSe Plastic Surgery in Fort Lauderdale, FL, our talented experts know that Xeomin can be an ideal wrinkle relaxing treatment for you.

What Areas Does Xeomin Treat?

Xeomin, like other neurotoxin injectable treatments, can be used on almost every zone of the face. In particular, this injectable treatment is designed to be used on the forehead and between the brows, which are the areas of the face where deep dynamic wrinkles are more likely to form. However, this neurotoxin injection can also be used on other wrinkles, including:

  • Bunny lines
  • Chin dimples
  • Smile and laugh lines
  • Gummy smile
  • And more

These days, the use of neurotoxin injections is more diverse than ever. With Botox leading the way, research, clinical trials, and off-label use has found that neurotoxin injections can be beneficial in more areas of the face that only the forehead. For this reason, if you are interested in using Xeomin on multiple areas of the face, please speak with one of our experts before your appointment.

How Does Xeomin Work?

As an injectable treatment, your treatment appointments will involve using a small, thin needle to inject several units of this neurotoxin directly into the muscles of the face, paying particular attention to muscles that contract frequently enough to form wrinkles. Your treatment appointments should take about 30 minutes to complete. And while most patients are perfectly comfortable during their treatment, you may also have the option of using a topical numbing cream if you are pain-sensitive or if needles make you nervous.

The real key behind this treatment is the formula of the injectable, which is made from an incredibly purified form of botulinum toxin. Once injected, this neurotoxin modulates the way your muscles and your brain communicates, which in turn relaxes the muscles in your face to reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

What Do You Need to Know About Neurotoxins?

Neurotoxins are interesting compounds that are a continued source of research by the scientific community, but what we do know about the use of neurotoxins for cosmetic purposes is very interesting. For example, the botulinum toxin used for this injectable is harvested from the toxins secreted by a specific strain of bacteria. Other things you should know about neurotoxin treatments include:

Blocks Muscle Movement

Neurotoxins specifically interfere with the way your nerves communicate with your brain. The easiest way to think about the function of neurotoxins is to imagine your treatment as a barrier. Once the neurotoxin is injected into a particular muscle, the motor nerves associated with that muscle will experience a transmission block that prevents movement messages from being received or delivered.

What this means for you is that your brain may want to move a muscle in your face to make an expression but this desire will be blocked by the neurotoxin, which will stop that movement message from being delivered. When the message meets the barrier, there is no way for the muscles in your face to know they should move to form an expression.

Does Not Numb the Face

Many first-time patients have the misconception that neurotoxins will make their faces feel numb, but that isn’t the case. There are two different types of nerves in our bodies – nerves for movement and nerves for sensation. Neurotoxins specifically only block nerves associated with movement, which means you will still be able to feel your face after your treatment.

Be Aware of Tolerance

Generally speaking, using a neurotoxin injectable may mean you need to be aware of the possibility of building up a tolerance to the injectable. In fact, tolerance is a real possibility for both Botox and Dysport. This is largely because the body learns how to recognize proteins added to neurotoxin treatments, and once those proteins are recognized, the neurotoxin becomes less effective. Xeomin is different. Unlike Botox and Dysport, which are formulated with proteins, Xeomin is a purified formula that does not contain any proteins, which completely removes the possibility of building up any tolerance.

In practical terms, the fact that this treatment will not lead to tolerance means that you can use this injectable wrinkle relaxer for consecutive treatments without any concern that the treatment will become less effective over time. For many patients, this is preferable as it’s much easier to maintain results when you don’t need to switch between multiple neurotoxin treatments.

How Many Units Will You Need?

In order to achieve your ideal results, you will likely require multiple units of this neurotoxin. The number of units required for your treatment will depend on the severity of your age-related concerns, as well as how many areas you are treating at one time. However, you can generally expect to require units in a range such as:

  • 20 to 40 units for the forehead
  • 5 to 20 units for crow’s feet
  • 15 to 30 units for eyebrow lines

Other off-label uses of this neurotoxin will have different unit ranges based on how deep the fine lines and wrinkles in the treatment area are, as well as your specific treatment goals.

Will You Need a Consultation?

Yes! If this is your first time using a neurotoxin or this neurotoxin specifically, you will need to attend a consultation appointment so you can learn about this treatment. We will go over your reasonable expectations and goals for this treatment, paying particularly close attention to any trouble spots you indicate. We may complete a small allergy test during your consultation to ensure that you are not allergic to botulinum toxin.

How Should You Prepare for Treatment?

Since this is a non-invasive treatment, you will not need to do much to prepare for your treatment. You will need to avoid direct unprotected sunlight for at least five days before your treatment and not take any blood-thinning medications or supplements. Additionally, if you wish to reduce the possible risk of bruising as a result of the treatment, you may want to take Arnica supplements like SinEcch for one to three days before your appointment. Also, please reschedule your appointment if you have an active cold sore or other skin break out, such as eczema.

What Does Recovery Include?

There is no formal recovery for this treatment, as most patients can return to all normal daily activities immediately following treatment. However, you will need to follow some aftercare directions for about three to five days after your appointment to ensure that you achieve your ideal results. For example, you will be told to avoid excess sweating, heat, sunlight, and movement, such as strenuous exercise. You are also encouraged to wear sun protection outside of at least SPF 30 or greater.

How Soon Can You See Results?

This neurotoxin injectable delivers results much quicker than other treatments, such as Dysport. Most patients can see results from this treatment within four days of their treatment appointment as wrinkles begin to relax on the face. What this means for you is that you will be able to enjoy your results for a longer period of time.

How Long Does Xeomin Last?

The results of this treatment are designed to last for about three to four months at a time. The longevity of your specific results will depend on the severity of your skin condition, your age, the location of the treatment, and how well you respond to the neurotoxin. It’s common for mature patients or patients with more severe wrinkles to enjoy results for three months, while patients with mild concerns may enjoy results for four or more months.

How Frequently Should You Have Treatment?

Most patients have this treatment on a regular basis to continue results without pause or delay. In fact, most patients schedule treatment appointments every three or four months to top-up their current results before they begin to fade. Some patients may find that less frequent treatments, such as twice a year, works better for their individual needs.

How Can You Maintain Results?

Maintaining the results of a neurotoxin treatment involves more than keeping up with your regular maintenance appointments. While neurotoxin treatments can work as a preventative measure against the formation of new wrinkles, it’s still important that you take care of your skin between appointments to truly fight against aging effectively.

Skincare Products and Routine

Your skincare products and routine are your greatest allies when it comes to maintaining your ideal results and fighting against aging. To start, your skincare routine should include daily cleansing, moisturizing, and sun care to help maintain the health of your skin and protect your skin from harmful UV rays that cause premature aging.

Your skincare products are easily important. Patients who are concerned about age-related symptoms usually do well to use anti-aging skincare products, such as moisturizers. However, another important component of your skincare products will be incorporating skin actives that specifically target symptoms, such as fine lines, melasma, sun damage, and uneven skin texture. Retinol is the gold standard for anti-aging skin actives that should be included in your daily skincare routine.

Is This Treatment Safe?

Yes! This treatment has been approved by the FDA for the purpose of relaxing wrinkles since 2011, which means that it has withstood the test of numerous clinical trials and efficacy studies. As a point of note, this particular neurotoxin is considered even safer than Botox and Dysport due to the purity of the formula, which significantly lowers the risk of possible side effects from the treatment.

Who Are Good Candidates for Treatment?

Most people are good candidates for this neurotoxin injectable treatment, particularly those who have no known allergies to botulinum toxin and who are not currently pregnant or breastfeeding. If you have used other neurotoxins in the past, then you should be able to use this one.
