What is Labiaplasty?

You may have heard about labiaplasty on television or read about it in a magazine, but you may not be sure what exactly it is. This procedure can increase a woman’s pleasure, raise self-confidence and improve a woman’s comfort, both physically and psychologically. Understanding this procedure is integral to deciding whether it may be right for you.

A Surgical Procedure

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure designed to reduce the size of a woman’s labia. Most women choose to have their inner labia reduced or removed entirely, but the outer labia can be reduced as well. Labiaplasty is performed as an outpatient procedure. During the surgery, our surgeon can carefully remove the excess tissue. The amount of tissue removed is discussed with the patient before surgery.
Contrary to some common misinformation, labiaplasty is not a procedure designed to make a woman’s genitals more pleasing to others. It is performed to make the labia more pleasing to the individual, either aesthetically, practically or both.

Practical Reasons

There are a multitude of reasons why women request labiaplasty, but most reasons deal with practical issues. In many cases, active women who enjoy cycling, running or horseback riding may find their long labia chafe against their clothing, saddle or seat. This can be extremely uncomfortable and lead to painful Bartholin cysts forming on the labia. Reducing the size of the labia removes that source of discomfort and allows the woman to be as active as she wishes.

Other women experience painful penetration during sex due to their long labia. The labia can be pushed into the vaginal entrance, pulling at the delicate skin and irritating it. This is another common reason to consider labiaplasty.

Aesthetic Reasons

For women with aesthetic concerns, some are embarrassed by the bulge or ridge made in swimwear, dance leotards or other form-fitting clothing. Others simply don’t like how their long labia look. Mismatched labia, while very common, can also cause a woman to seek labiaplasty. Whether her concerns are aesthetic, practical or a mixture of both, a labiaplasty procedure can solve these issues permanently.
