What Should You Expect From an Arm Lift?

When the skin on your upper arms begins to sag, you might feel uncomfortable wearing sleeveless shirts or dresses. If you haven’t been able to improve this problem by exercising or using topical anti-aging products, don’t worry. You can fix this aesthetic issue by receiving an arm lift from eSSe Plastic Surgery in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

What Should You Expect From an Arm Lift?

An arm lift is a cosmetic procedure that is designed to improve your sagging skin and reduce unwanted fat. When you decide to use this method to change your look, you should expect to receive general anesthesia before your procedure begins. Receiving general anesthesia will allow you to remain relaxed and unconscious while we improve the condition of your upper arms.

After the general anesthesia has taken effect, we will make small incisions in the inner area of your upper arms. Next, we will carefully eliminate loose skin from both of your arms. Under some circumstances, we may use a technique called liposuction to remove unwanted fat from your arms. Although your procedure will be customized, you should usually expect this process to take about two to three hours to complete.

Why Has the Appearance of Your Upper Arms Changed?

Your Age

Your age, weight, and other factors can cause the appearance of your upper arms to change as you become older. As you get older, you will naturally make lower amounts of two important fibrous proteins called elastin and collagen. Your decreased production of these two proteins will make your skin more likely to develop sagging issues and wrinkles. As a result, it’s very normal for the skin on your upper arms to lose elasticity and start to droop when you are in your forties or fifties.

Your Lifestyle

Your diet and other habits can also change the appearance of your upper arms. In particular, if you frequently drink beer, wine, or other types of alcohol, the skin on your arms may become loose at an earlier time in your life.

Similarly, receiving large amounts of sun exposure will increase your risk of developing fine lines, loose skin, and other aesthetic issues. If you often spend time outside without regularly applying sunscreen or wearing long sleeves, the skin on your upper arms will be more likely to sag.

Your Weight

Losing a large amount of weight in a very brief period of time can damage the skin on your upper arms. When your weight decreases, the skin on the underside of your arms may become very loose. If you gain weight, your upper arms may become less toned.

How Should You Prepare for This Arm Procedure?

Reviewing Your Medical History

Before we lift the skin on your arms, you will need to set up an initial meeting at our office in Fort Lauderdale. During your first consultation, we will go over your medical background. We will talk about any health issues that you have, and review all of the supplements and medications that you are taking. This information will help us determine if you are eligible to receive this arm procedure.

You should be ready to describe any procedures and aesthetic treatments that you’ve gotten in the past. For example, you should tell us if you used a non-invasive technique to firm the skin on your arms. In addition to discussing your previous treatments, we will carefully examine your arms. During your physical examination, we may prepare for your procedure by taking detailed photographs of your upper arms.

Discussing Your Cosmetic Goals

You will also need to tell us about the improvements that you would like to see in your arms. As we discuss your aesthetic goals, we will make sure that you have a realistic understanding of the likely effects of your lift.

During this discussion, you will be able to ask us questions about the cost, recovery period, and other aspects of this arm procedure. For example, you might be interested in hearing more about the amount of time that you will probably spend away from your job.

Quitting Smoking

If you smoke cigarettes, you should be prepared to quit before and after you receive your lift. Avoiding cigarettes will improve your upper arms’ ability to recover from this cosmetic procedure.

How Long Will Your Arms Take To Recover?

On average, it will take you about two to four weeks to recover from your arm lift. The specific duration of your downtime will depend on the techniques that we used to improve your upper arms, the amount of excess skin and fat that we removed, and other factors. Before we begin your lift, we will give you more details about the likely length of your recovery period and the rules that you will need to follow during this time.

Wearing Compression Garments

Once your lift is complete, we will wrap your arms in an elastic garment. This special garment will support your arms and help them recover from your procedure. You may need to wear this garment for two days. After this time has passed, we may tell you to use a different type of compression garment to support your upper arms. You may be required to wear your garment during the next month.

Resting Your Arms

You’ll need to rest your arms and avoid engaging in other challenging physical activities during the beginning of your recovery period. Although your instructions will be personalized, we may advise you not to move your arms higher than your shoulders for at least two weeks.

During this time, you might need to ask a relative or friend to assist you with cooking, cleaning, and other household chores. In addition, you might need to ask this person to help with your childcare duties and other family responsibilities.

Taking a Break From Your Job

The amount of time that you spend away from your job will depend on the type of tasks that you usually perform at your workplace. If you work in an office job and perform mostly sedentary tasks, you may be able to return to your workplace after about two weeks have passed. If you are required to complete physically challenging tasks at work, you might need to take one or two months off.

When Will Your Arms Start To Improve?

After your cosmetic procedure is finished, your upper arms will look sleeker and firmer. However, you probably won’t be able to evaluate the final result of your lift until you have fully recovered. In general, you will probably see the final changes in your upper arms within a few months.

Will This Procedure Permanently Improve Your Upper Arms?

The techniques that we use to reduce your excess fat and lift your skin will create lasting improvements in the appearance of your upper arms. As a result, you should be able to enjoy toned, attractive arms for many years. That said, if you gain a large amount of weight after your lift is complete, your upper arms may become less defined. In addition, the condition of your skin will continue to change as you become older.

If you would like to enjoy toned, contoured arms for a long time, you should adopt a healthy diet and follow a sustainable exercise plan. When you go outside, you should protect the skin on your upper arms by wearing long-sleeved shirts or regularly applying sunscreen.

Who Is Eligible To Receive This Arm Procedure?

If you have excess fat or loose skin on your upper arms, you may be eligible to receive this type of lift. In general, you will be a good candidate for this procedure if your weight is stable and you are in good health.

If you are very overweight or if you experience frequent fluctuations in your weight, you might not be able to receive this type of lift. Similarly, you might not be eligible for this procedure if you smoke cigarettes or have a medical condition that would alter your arms’ ability to heal. For example, you might need to use other methods to tone your arms if you have a bleeding disorder.

Can You Use Other Aesthetic Techniques To Lift Your Skin and Contour Your Figure?

At eSSe Plastic Surgery, we can use thigh lifts, skin tightening treatments, and many other methods to improve your appearance.

Receiving a Thigh Lift

Like the skin on your upper arms, the tissues on your thighs may become loose as you get older. If you do not like these changes, you might be a good candidate for a thigh lift. This type of lift will usually take about two to three hours to complete. We will start by providing you with local or general anesthesia. Next, we will create a very small incision in the crease on the inside of each of your legs.

These small incisions will allow us to carefully remove unwanted fat and extra skin on your thighs. After we have finished improving your thighs, we will place a special garment onto your legs. While your thighs are recovering, you will need to rest and avoid strenuous exercise. It’s common to spend about two weeks to one month recovering from this aesthetic procedure.

Getting Skin Tightening Treatments

If you would like to firm your skin, you should think about receiving Exilis Protégé treatments. During your quick and easy treatment, we will use radiofrequency waves to increase your creation of new collagen fibers. This treatment can be used to firm and smooth the skin on your abdomen, face, knees, and many other locations. We will use advanced cooling technology to help you feel comfortable during your appointments.

We will usually recommend receiving two to four Exilis Protégé treatments. You will need to wait about one to two weeks between each of your skin firming sessions. In general, you will notice the full benefit of this technique within about three months, and the improvements in your loose skin and wrinkles may last for more than 24 months. If you would like to enjoy firm skin for a long time, you may decide to get yearly touch-up sessions.

Lift Your Arms

Receiving an arm lift is an excellent way to tone skin that you haven’t been able to firm on your own. After your procedure is complete, the improvements in your target area will probably last for many years. If you would like to increase your confidence when you are wearing short-sleeved shirts or sleeveless dresses, contact us at eSSe Plastic Surgery in Fort Lauderdale, FL to set up an initial consultation.
