Am I a Good Candidate for a Mommy Makeover?

Mommy Makeover

A Mommy Makeover is a combination cosmetic surgery designed to repair issues caused to a woman’s body by pregnancy. Most include some form of breast augmentation and a tummy tuck, with buttock and thigh work also being popular.

If you aren’t happy with the effects pregnancy has had on your body, a Mommy Makeover can help you reclaim your pre-pregnancy shape. While every woman has a different body and her own desires, there are some common factors that all good surgical candidates have in common.

You’re Back to Your Normal Weight

Don’t be fooled by models and fitness gurus who are back to their pre-pregnancy weight within weeks of giving birth; they are paid to look the way they do.

The average woman can take a year or longer to lose all the baby fat and get back to her normal weight. You want to get there before seeking surgery, as weight fluctuations can undo cosmetic surgery results. For example, if you lose weight after a tummy tuck, you may be left with loose skin on your abdomen all over again, whereas if you gain weight, you could develop stretch marks again.

A variation of a few pounds likely won’t matter, but you want to be as close to your normal size as possible.

You Are Generally Healthy

Cosmetic surgery is like any other surgery in that it places demands on your body’s resources and your immune system. Ideally, you will want to be over any anemia or calcium deficiency you experienced during pregnancy.

If you were diagnosed with gestational diabetes, you will want to wait until it resolves or your blood sugar levels are well under control. If you have any other chronic condition or disease that could hinder your ability to withstand anesthesia and surgery or heal up well afterwards, talk to our experts to discern if surgery is safe for you.

You Have a Support System at Home

Recovering from a Mommy Makeover takes about six to eight weeks. For the first two weeks or so, you may be in moderate discomfort and find daily tasks to be slow and overwhelming.

You will likely be more tired than usual, as healing can take up a lot of energy. Ideally, you will have a spouse, family member or trusted friend who can help you during the weeks immediately following your surgery.

You’re Done with Lactation

Some Mommy Makeovers involve a lift procedure and implants while others include a reduction. No matter what you want done to your breasts, any surgery can make future lactation impossible.

If you are not opposed to offering any future children formula, this won’t be an issue. If you want to breastfeed again, the breast augmentation portion of the Mommy Makeover likely isn’t right for you at this time.
