How Does an Arm Lift Work?

Are you struggling to get your arms toned? Do you feel like no matter how hard you exercise, you can’t seem to achieve the results that you want? If so, then it might be time to consider an arm lift procedure. At eSSe Plastic Surgery in Fort Lauderdale, FL, we offer this cosmetic treatment to help our patients achieve the toned arms they’ve always wanted.

How Does an Arm Lift Work?

An arm lift, also known as Brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure that helps to improve the appearance of the upper arms. During this procedure, excess skin and tissue are removed from the upper arms in order to create a more toned and sculpted appearance. Additionally, some patients may also opt to have liposuction performed during their Brachioplasty in order to remove any pockets of fat that are resistant to diet and exercise.

Consultation

During the consultation, we will ask about your medical history, current health status, and your goals for the surgery. We will also perform a physical examination to assess the condition of your skin and the amount of excess fat and tissue. This information is important in order to determine if you are a good candidate for the surgery. A consultation is also beneficial because it allows you to learn more about the surgery and what it entails.

Our doctors will explain the different techniques that can be used, as well as what part you’ll play to ensure a successful procedure. This is an important opportunity to ask any questions or express any concerns you may have about the procedure. A consultation also provides an opportunity to get to know our surgeons and staff and to ensure that we are the right team to help you achieve your goals.

Preparation

As you prepare for surgery, there are a few things you need to do to ensure a smooth and successful procedure. First, be sure to follow any instructions from your surgeon regarding diet and medications. You may be asked to stop taking certain medications or supplements a week or two before surgery. You should also avoid drinking alcohol for at least a week prior to your procedure.

Additionally, be sure to get plenty of rest and avoid strenuous activity in the days leading up to your surgery. The night before the surgery, you should shower and shave the incision site. You should also avoid eating or drinking anything after midnight.

Surgery Procedure

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia and usually takes about two to three hours. First, the surgeon will make an incision in the natural crease of the arm, extending from the armpit to just below the elbow. Next, excess skin and fat will be removed, and the incisions will be closed with sutures. Finally, drains may be placed in the incisions to help prevent fluid buildup.

We use state-of-the-art surgical suites and observe extreme medical hygiene to ensure your safety and comfort. You can expect to see a dramatic improvement in the appearance of your arms after two weeks

Monitoring

Immediately after your surgery, you will be brought into a recovery room where you will be closely monitored. We will check on you frequently to make sure you are pain-free and progressing well. Once you are awake and alert, you will be able to go home. Most patients stay overnight in the hospital for observation, but some may be discharged the same day. You will need someone to drive you home and help you around the house for the first few days.

8 Postoperative Care Tips

1. Keep Your Arm Elevated As Much as Possible

You can keep your arms lifted by propping them up on pillows when lying down or by hanging them over the side of a chair when sitting. Keeping your arms elevated helps to reduce swelling by decreasing the amount of blood flow to the area and by reducing the accumulation of fluid in the tissue. Additionally, elevating your arms helps to decrease the amount of tension on the incisions, which can also lead to reduced swelling.

2. Follow Your Doctor’s Instructions for Postoperative Care

After Brachioplasty, we will likely recommend taking medication, such as antibiotics, and showing up for all scheduled appointments. During your appointment, we will check the incisions, drains, and sensation in the arms. The doctor will also assess your range of motion. It is important to follow the doctor’s instructions for postoperative care so that you can heal properly and minimize your risk of complications.

3. Drink Plenty of Fluids

There’re different ways that drinking fluids can help with recovery. First, drinking plenty of fluids helps to keep the body hydrated and prevents constipation. It also helps to flush out any toxins that may have accumulated during surgery. In addition, staying hydrated also helps to keep your energy levels up and speed up the healing process.

4. Avoid Strenuous Activity

It’s common for patients to try and use their arms to lift themselves, especially in bed. However, this can put a lot of strain on the incisions and lead to complications. The best way to avoid this is to take it easy and let your body recover. Take a few days off from work or other activities, and focus on relaxing and letting your body heal. After a week or so, you should be able to start slowly getting back to your normal routine.

5. Stay Away From Heating Pads

There are a few reasons for staying away from heating pads. First, the nerves need time to heal. If you use a heating pad, you might not be able to judge the true temperature of these devices and might end up causing more damage to your nerves.

Second, the heating pad can cause the skin to become irritated. This is especially true if you have any open wounds or stitches. Finally, the heat from the heating pad can increase swelling. This can make it difficult for the incisions to heal properly.

6. Wear Your Compression Garment As Directed

Wearing the garment as directed helps to minimize swelling and bruising, and promotes proper healing. Additionally, compression garments help to support the newly-repaired tissue and prevent it from stretching or sagging. It’s crucial to follow our instructions regarding how long to wear the garment, as well as how often to clean it.

In most cases, you will need to wear the garment for at least three to four weeks following surgery. Depending on the extent of your surgery, you may also need to wear the garment during daytime hours for several weeks.

7. Keep the Incision Clean and Dressed

You will need to keep the incision clean and dry for at least two weeks. The best way to do this is to wear loose-fitting clothing that does not rub against the incision. You should also avoid taking showers or baths during this time.

If you get your incision wet, be sure to pat it dry with a clean towel. It’s also crucial to watch for signs of infection, such as redness, swelling, or drainage from the incision. If you notice any of these signs, be sure to contact us right away.

8. Maintain Proper Diet and Nutrition

Eating plenty of nutritious foods will help your body heal and recover more quickly. Some specific examples of foods to eat include lean protein, such as chicken or fish; colorful fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamins and antioxidants; whole grains, for fiber and energy; and dairy, for calcium and other essential nutrients. Limit your intake of alcohol, as it can interfere with healing. You should also avoid addictive substances, as they can contribute to anxiety and depression.
