Breast Reduction Surgery: How to Prepare

breast reduction

If you feel uncomfortable with large breasts, you may consider breast reduction surgery from eSSe Plastic Surgery. Large breasts can cause your body to look unbalanced as well as trigger back pain, nerve pain, and restrict physical activity. Breast reduction removes the extra fatty tissues to resize the breasts. It is natural to feel anxious about any type of changes to your body, but these tips will help you feel prepared.

Get Your Home, Time Off, and Transportation Prepared

Several days before the procedure, gather a mirror, plenty of gauze, ice, towels, and wash rags. Have several comfortable loose shirts available as well as a comfortable place to sleep with soft pillows. Recliners are commonly suggested to sleep in while you recover, since you will only be able to stay on your back.

Arrange for someone to drive you home from the procedure, since you will be under heavy sedation. Make certain you get enough help to do daily chores for several days, and if possible, someone to stay overnight. Be prepared to arrange at least one week off work for your recovery.

Exercise More

Increase physical activity before the procedure for a faster recovery. You may notice changes in breast size when you gain or lose weight, so being at a healthy weight gives you better results. Yoga is an excellent activity to prepare the body for alterations in the center, and yoga breathing expands the lungs to help compensate for the strain large breasts place on the ribs.

Stop Smoking, Drinking Alcohol, and Taking Certain Medications

Smoking can constrict the blood vessels during a procedure and slow recovery time. In fact, our medical team may not do the breast reduction unless you quit two to three weeks before the procedure. Do not smoke until two or three weeks following the breast reduction if you have not stopped smoking altogether. Likewise, alcohol should be stopped one week before the breast reduction, since it may interfere with anesthesia, and discontinue it until five days after the procedure.

Also, stop taking aspirin two weeks before the reduction, since it could cause blood thinning. Our team may ask you for a list of medications you are currently taking. You will need to take medication that doesn’t contain aspirin until you recover.
